Dr. John Whelan was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor's of Arts in Biological Sciences. While at Berkeley, he met and married his wife, Nancy.
Dr. Whelan and family moved to Santa Maria to start his dental practice
in late 1982, following the birth of his son, Andrew. Andrew attended local schools and participated in local sports before moving on to graduate from UCLA. Nancy was involved in various PTAs, and has worked for the Santa Maria Bonita Schools for more than 20 years.
Since 1998, the Whelans have shared their home with exchange students
from Germany, Spain, Belgium, France, Italy, Slovakia, and Japan. They have remained in touch with many of the students and have visited some in their home countries.
Dr. Whelan enjoys jogging, bicycling, and swimming. He has completed a marathon, countless 10K runs and biathlons, and continues to participate in sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. He supported youth soccer for many years as a Saturday referee. Dr. Whelan thinks the Central Coast is a wonderful place to find dark skies to pursue his interest in astronomy, often taking his telescope out into the hills and valleys to view the stars, planets, and constellations.
Dr. Whelan is an enthusiastic ceramic artist
and enjoys the remarkable overlap of skills and techniques shared by dentistry and the ceramic arts. He finds that each complements and reinforces the other. His office is decorated with some of his pottery and sculptures. Nancy has also contributed to the artistic décor with some beautiful examples of quilt making.
Dr. Whelan is proud to be a blood donor
for more than 25 years, donating nearly 100 units to those in need. He hopes this effort has saved a life or two along the way and he encourages others to donate.
